Lesson Plans

Since we have started doing school A has loved it, I mean LOVED IT! She is constantly asking to do more school. Some people have asked me what we do so I hope this helps you. A lot of my ideas I have been copied from other people and changed to meet the needs of the girls. I have tried to give credit where I can, some of it I have forgotten.

We begin the day by moving A and E's markers along the calendar to show the passage of days. We then talk about what day it is, what day was yesterday and what is tomorrow. We also talk about the weather and what season we are in. I found pictures on the web to use for this.

Next we move into our lesson for the day. On Monday we do Language Arts (30 min), music (15 min) and Bible verse and story/passage (15 min). Tuesday, we have Language Arts again (30 min), math (15 min), and Bible (15 min). Wednesday we study Language Arts, math, music (30 min), science (20 min) and Bible verse and story (10 min). Thursday we reviewed Language Arts, math, music (30 min) social studies (15 min) and then an art project (15-30 min). On Friday, Language Arts, music, math (30 min), another art project/game/activity (20 min) and review a little. We have a chalkboard in our kitchen to help us remember what we are talking about for the week. I have listed (top row) the letter, them, color or shape, scripture verse, ocean creature, flower, (bottom row) number, vocabulary words, poem, mammal and bird.

For Language Arts we go over the letter for the week, upper and lower, and what sound the letter makes. I try to pick a theme for the week that relates back to the letter for the week. I also like to use vocabulary words that relate back to the theme we are studying for the week. I also like to find a poem or rhyme that relates back to the theme too. I have made many trips to the library to find books that relate back to the theme too that we read during this time. (I have usually gone longer than 30 minutes because the girls love to read books!)

For Bible I have found a list of scripture verses for young children to memorize at this website,
that has been great. I also try to find some story, theme, or event that begins with the letter we are studying. We have done Adam and Eve, Tower of Babel, etc.

For music we sing songs that relate to the letter like Take Me Out to the Ball Game for the letter B. Or I find songs about the letter. I found so many different types of songs about apples that various people had created. I also like to find composers whose name starts with a letter: Amadeus Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Copland, etc.

Math we try to work on counting, shapes, sizes, orders, etc. We have gone around the house and taken pictures of circles we can find. We have tried counting out objects that just have one (not ready for scissors yet). We have stacked blocks in groups of two, put toys in order of big, bigger, biggest, and small, smaller, smallest.

When we get to Social Studies I usually give the girls a few choices of things and let them pick. We have done Johnny Appleseed, Ben Franklin, China, on and on we go. We usually read about them and try to do something that relates back to what we have learned.

For science we have been looking at different mammals, ocean creatures, birds and flowers that begin with the letter for the week. I know we won't be able to do this for everything but it has been good so far and it is helping to build vocabulary. Another thing we have done is talked about how bread was made and the life cycle of a butterfly when we did B. For C we are going to learn about corn and how it grows and is processed.

For our last time together on Friday we try to do something fun and get out of the house for a little bit, if we can. We have baked an apple pie, painted an apple picture, visited a local bakery (Panera) where we looked at the oven and talked about all of the different breads they had made. Of course, we had to enjoy some too so we all got a bagel to eat for lunch. Whatever I can think of that is fun and relates back to what we have read or talked about.
